My name is Marissa Magcawas—a determined single mother, cancer survivor, and author. My life story is one of perseverance, faith, and gratitude. Through numerous trials, I’ve grown stronger, and each challenge has shaped me into who I am today. Being a single mom taught me the true meaning of strength, and my battle with cancer was not only a test of physical endurance but also a spiritual journey that reinforced the power of hope.

My Humble Beginnings

I was born in San Diego, San Pablo City, Philippines, as the sixth of eight children in a loving but financially modest family. From an early age, I learned the value of hard work, sacrifice, and the importance of education. Despite our financial challenges, my parents emphasized the significance of learning, which became the foundation for my success. Thanks to their support, I excelled academically, graduating as my class’s valedictorian. I pursued a BA in Communication Arts at the prestigious Philippine Women’s University, where I developed my skills in communication and leadership. My time at university was transformative, teaching me independence, resilience, and perseverance—lessons that continue to shape my journey.

My Journey to Overcome Life’s Challenges

My journey has been marked by both hardships and triumphs. In 1991, I moved to Canada as a live-in caregiver, which tested my patience, adaptability, and strength. Later, becoming a single mom to my son, Tyrell, taught me the depth of unconditional love. Then, in 2014, a breast cancer diagnosis changed my life. It was a moment that deepened my faith and taught me to appreciate the simple joys of life. I’ve faced many challenges, including cancer, a 2015 car accident, and periods of depression. Through it all, my faith, love for my family, and the support of those around me have provided the strength to persevere.

My Journey of Resilience and Faith

I was born in San Pablo City, Philippines, the sixth of eight children. Despite growing up in a modest home, my parents instilled in me the importance of hard work, faith, and education. Their sacrifices inspired me to excel, eventually graduating as my class’s valedictorian. I later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts, a milestone I take great pride in.

In 1991, I moved to Canada as a caregiver, a life-changing experience that taught me resilience, compassion, and patience. Adapting to a new country was difficult, but it opened doors to personal growth and new opportunities.

Becoming a single mother to my son, Tyrell, was one of the most rewarding challenges of my life. Raising him taught me the power of unconditional love and the importance of leading by example.

In 2014, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The fear and uncertainty were overwhelming, but with faith, prayer, and support from family and friends, I faced each day with courage and gratitude. I learned to treasure every moment and focus on what truly matters.

In 2015, I survived a severe car accident that deepened my belief in the gift of life and the importance of making each day count. This experience also inspired me to share my story with others facing their own battles.

Today, I look back at my struggles as stepping stones to growth. As an author and advocate, I am dedicated to inspiring others to embrace their own stories of resilience. Life may be full of challenges, but with faith, determination, and love, we can overcome anything.

My mission is to encourage others to live with purpose, embrace gratitude, and find joy in the journey. It’s never too late to rise, rebuild, and shine, no matter where you start.
